The Auto Locksmith:
The Roadside (or Car Park) Hero
Nobody likes getting locked out of their car. It’s a nightmare, especially if you’re in an unfamiliar location (or a spooky place)! That’s where an auto locksmith swoops in like a caped crusader (without the Batmobile and dark outfit). Here’s what you’ll handle as an auto locksmith.
- Emergency automobile lockouts
- Extracting broken keys from locks
- Replacing stolen or lost keys
- Ignition repair and replacement
- Creating new key
- Reprogramming car keys
Becoming an auto locksmith-slash-roadside here is especially great in the UK, where rain uncannily loves to surprise us. You will save countless customers from awkward situations. Have you tried standing in a Tesco parking lot with several carts of groceries and no car key? That’s right! Your mobile locksmithing services will transform you into a roadside (or car park) hero!

Car Key Re-programmer:
The Tech Wizard
Have you noticed cars are getting smarter every year model? They now have immobiliser systems that prevent twoccers (car thieves) from stealing your four-wheeled wonder (or any vehicle) by hot-wiring it or using an improvised key. Immobiliser systems require a key with an electronic transponder chip that communicates with the ignition. Incorrect code? The engine won’t start.
Unfortunately, vehicle thieves aren’t the only issue. Smart keys can also be a real pain when they malfunction. That’s where your expertise as a car key re-programmer comes in, where you will specialise in:
- Programming and re-programming transponder keys
- Solving immobiliser system issues
- Replacing and pairing key fobs
This specialisation’s techie vibe adds a cool factor to your locksmith business. Vehicle owners will marvel as you work your magic with diagnostic software and tools, looking like you’re Q helping out 007.

Safe Specialist:
Keeper of Secrets
Safes aren’t just for banks and jewellery stores. Almost everyone – especially the affluent – has a Fort Knox-like miniature vault in their homes (and businesses) to protect everything from cash to priceless paintings and heirloom jewellery. This locksmith specialisation requires you to:
- Open locked safes without damaging them
- Install high-security safes for offices, homes, and businesses
- Repair and service safes
You will need to be discreet because your customers value privacy as much as security. Handling their prized possessions with professionalism and care will ensure trust and secure repeat business. Here’s a bonus! Cracking a safe feels like you’re starring in your own Hollywood heist film – minus the criminal intent!

Security Consultant:
The Advisor Everyone Needs
Did you know that over 650 homes get burglarised every single day? That’s for England and Wales alone, and we haven’t even factored in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and non-residential properties! Unsurprisingly, fortifying property defences is crucial, opening the doors to becoming a security consultant, where you will:
- Conduct property security assessments
- Advise on anti-snap locks and similar technologies
- Recommend tamper-resistant locks, alarm systems, and security cameras
You are your client’s trusted advisor, so they will sleep better at night. They expect you to offer tailored solutions to ensure a win-win for your reputation and their safety.

Access Control Technician:
The Gatekeeper of Modern Security
We live in an increasingly digital world, where nearly everything we use relies on a complex web of computers, controllers, wires, and other technologies. It goes without saying that more and more homes and businesses are looking to beef up their property security by integrating computerised systems.
Although only 5% of 5.5 million businesses in the UK have access control systems, it’s still a huge market to unleash your expertise as an access control technician. Clients will expect you to:
- Install keyless entry systems, including cards and fobs
- Install, maintain, and repair car park barriers, electronic gates, turnstiles, electronic door systems, and similar platforms
- Troubleshooting and maintaining access control software
- Setting up biometric systems (fingerprint and iris)
Access control technology is a forward-thinking speciality that pushes you at the forefront of 21st-century security trends. Moreover (and let’s face it), fiddling with high-tech gadgets is pretty fun and cool!

Key Cutter:
The Bread and Butter
This service is hardly a locksmith’s speciality. After all, all locksmiths must know how to cut and refine a key, right? It’s old-school, we know. However, key cutting remains an essential locksmithing skill, and you can specialise in that.
Key cutting is a timeless service, from duplicating padlock keys, broken keys, and house keys to replicating restricted keys, security keys, and antique keys for collectors. You could even fabricate a key for lost ones. It’s a versatile skill that guarantees:
- Repeat customers, which translates to a booming business because it’s a quick service
- Minimal investment and easy-to-learn
- Creativity through design personalisation or offering novelty
Key cutting is the bread-and-butter locksmithing service that keeps the tills ringing while other specialities grow.

Emergency Locksmith:
The 24/7 Rescuer
Emergencies don’t have offices or schedules, do they? Becoming an emergency locksmith puts you on the speed dial of everyone in distress, where you’ll handle:
- Home, vehicle, and business lockouts
- Lock repairs after break-ins or burglary
- Immediate lock replacements for added security
You will be the saviour people count on during stressful situations. Lost keys in London? Rainy night in Manchester? You’re there to save the day (and night, too!). That’s how incredibly rewarding it is to be a 24/7 locksmith is (it’s also more financially fulfilling).

Be a Jack-of-all-Key Trades Locksmith
While focusing on one locksmithing speciality makes perfect sense (especially if you’re just beginning in the biz), it won’t help you stay ahead of the competition. You must realise that UK customers expect more than ordinary lock repairs. Diversifying your locksmithing skills helps!
- You will appeal to a wider audience and increase your customer base (need I mention the financial rewards?).
- A diverse locksmithing speciality boosts your reputation, especially if you offer unique, customised services.
- Diversifying future-proofs your business, ensuring your locksmithing service remains relevant as we move toward the second half of the 21st century.

Dave
Connect Housing
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Nicky England and MPL for the fantastic service they provided for locksmith training. At each step of the process they were courteous and very well organised. I sent 5 of my technicians on the 3 day course and it has proven to be not only an enhancement of my teams skills but also a huge saving by being able to gain entry to our housing stock non destructively.
I would recommend MPL to any other customer and give their service delivery and training methods 10/10.
Bill
Ashton Pioneer Homes

I sent two of my operatives to MPL for locksmith training. The training was excellent and they have been able to put this in to good use. It has shortened the time taken for evictions and helped us portray a more professional image in front of bailiffs and other staff.
I would highly recommend them for training and for purchasing the right tools.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to train to become a locksmith?
After your initial 3 or 5-Day training, it can usually take a further 12 months to become an experienced locksmith. You will always be learning on the job, and have to keep up to date with the latest products and industry related regulations such as lock standards.
The easiest way to begin your new locksmithing career is by attending our comprehensive 3 or 5-Day Locksmith Course which is perfect for beginners who are looking to learn how to become a locksmith within one week. Many of our students have gone on to set up their own locksmithing businesses immediately after completing the course.
I am new to locksmithing, do I need any qualifications to train as a locksmith?
Whilst you don’t need any qualifications to train, you need a desire and a commitment to learn. It always helps if you come from a manual job or background and that you’re used to working with the tools you’ll need.
What course should I take if I'm a complete beginner to locksmithing?
If you are new to locksmithing and aren’t familiar with the tools and manual work, we suggest you undertake our comprehensive 5 day City & Guilds/NCFE Specialist Courses as this will provide you extra time and any additional help you may need.
How much does locksmith training cost?
Our courses vary in price subject to course detail and training days required. Please to call us on 01924 693293 with any questions on the latest prices and availability or fill in our enquiry form.
Are your Accreditations and Certificates recognised?
We are the UK’s ONLY provider of officially Accredited City & Guilds and NCFE Certified locksmith courses. Our accreditations recognise the high standards, process and delivery of bespoke training programmes which no other provider in the UK can offer.
In addition, we also run a range of courses which upon completion students receive our MPL certificate, which because we are the largest training provider in the UK is recognised throughout the industry as the gold standard.
Do I have to be a member of any trade organisations?
No, these organisations tend to be private Ltd companies who are attempting to charge for membership. It is not compulsory to be a member; at the time of writing there are no governing bodies in this industry in the UK.

Why not take advantage of our Competitive Finance Packages?
Looking to attend one of our courses? We can help to make it financially viable, with one of our highly competitive, tailored finance packages.
