What are Key Safes?
Key safes are fitted for many different purposes and are found external to the room/property where spare keys can be found to allow access.
Whether on commercial or residential work, locksmiths will encounter either having to install key safes or indeed have to gain entry to them. This could be because the key safe is faulty or indeed a code has been changed or no longer can be remembered to open the safe.
Key safes are recommended for welfare reasons, maybe if certain people are either elderly, disabled or vulnerable in case immediate entry is required.
Key safes are usually found in some of the scenarios below for different reasons:-
HOMES – Installed to leave spare keys for family members, doctors, carers, cleaners, dog walkers and trades people.
HOLIDAY HOMES/LETS – Key safes are installed at the majority of holiday rental properties to alleviate owners/agents need to meet new guests on arrival every time. The guests are given a phone number to ring on arrival at the property and they are then given the code to access the key to the property.
SHEDS/STORAGE SPACES – Installed for tradespeople, family and delivery drivers.
YARD GATES – Installed for trades people, gardeners and delivery drivers.
BUSINESS/OFFICES – Usually installed on premises where multiple staff need access but do not want to distribute a large number of keys in case they are lost.

How long does it take to become a locksmith?
It varies from person to person, but it generally takes between 12 months to fully develop your locksmithing skills and competence. Even after you complete your locksmith training, it’s a job where you never stop learning, as there are always new processes, products, and industry standards to stay on top of.
To give yourself the best head start, it’s recommended that you attend our beginner’s locksmith course so you can develop all the fundamental skills. Our five-day locksmith specialist course is a great option for beginners. It teaches the basics of locksmithing over a weeklong course, and many students set up their own businesses shortly after.
I am new to locksmithing, do I need any qualifications to train as a locksmith?
No! You don’t need any qualifications to start most of our locksmith training courses. However, you will need a strong desire to learn the trade and be fully committed to the course. Also, while not essential, some prior experience in manual labour jobs and familiarity with tools can be helpful for beginners.
What course should I take if I'm a complete beginner to locksmithing?
If you lack experience with manual work and/or tools, then we recommend taking our five-day City & Guilds and NCFE Specialist Course. This course not only provides your with all the foundation knowledge you will require, it also provides for some additional time and assistance that could be beneficial anyone who is just starting out on their locksmithing journey.
How much does locksmith training cost?

Are your Accreditations and Certificates recognised?
We are the UK’s ONLY provider of officially Accredited City & Guilds and NCFE Certified locksmith courses. Our accreditations recognise the high standards, process and delivery of bespoke training programmes which no other provider in the UK can offer.
In addition, we also run a range of courses which upon completion students receive our MPL certificate, which because we are the largest training provider in the UK is recognised throughout the industry as the gold standard.
Do I have to be a member of any trade organisations?
No, these organisations tend to be private Ltd companies who are attempting to charge for membership. It is not compulsory to be a member; at the time of writing there are no governing bodies in this industry in the UK.
