How long does training take to become a locksmith?
Becoming a fully skilled locksmith usually takes around 12 months, following an initial five-day training course. As a professional locksmith, you will continuously have to stay up to date on the latest training and technologies so that your business stays viable and industry standards are met.
The easiest way to begin your career as a locksmith is to enrol in our beginner’s locksmith course which covers all the essentials you will require to get up and running quickly. At MPL, we offer a comprehensive five-day specialist locksmith course which is ideal for beginners to learn foundational locksmithing knowledge and skills within a week. Many of our graduates go on to immediately start their own business upon completion, taking smaller jobs and working their way up to larger, more responsible tasks.
I am new to locksmithing, do I need any qualifications to train as a locksmith?
Though you do not need any formal qualifications to join our training, you do need a commitment to learn. Coming from a manual job or background where you usually work with tools can also help.
What course should I take if I'm a complete beginner to locksmithing?
If you are new to locksmithing and aren’t familiar with the tools and manual work, we suggest you undertake our comprehensive 5 day City & Guilds/NCFE Specialist Courses which will provide you extra time and any additional help you may need.
How much does locksmith training cost?

Are your Accreditations and Certificates recognised?
We are the UK’s ONLY provider of officially Accredited City & Guilds and NCFE Certified locksmith courses. Our accreditations recognise the high standards, process and delivery of bespoke training programmes which no other provider in the UK can offer.
In addition, we also run a range of courses which upon completion students receive our MPL certificate, which because we are the largest training provider in the UK is recognised throughout the industry as the gold standard.
Do I have to be a member of any trade organisations?
No, you do not. Most of these organisations are private companies who want to charge for membership. Remember, it not compulsory to be a member of any of these companies, and as of time of writing, there are no governing bodies in the UK.
