Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to train to become a locksmith?
While our locksmith training courses last days, the path to becoming a truly professional locksmith can take a number of years. On average, it should take around 12 months for a locksmith to feel fully confident in dealing with the various tasks that can arise. Take one of our beginner’s courses, and you can learn all the essential skills to get you up and running quickly.
Although you can pick up the vital skills you need in around five days to a week, it takes years to master these skills. Over time, you will find work available across the profession, which will give you the chance to build experience and confidence.
I am new to locksmithing, do I need any qualifications to train as a locksmith?
To become a locksmith, you are under no obligation to have prior qualifications or credentials. What we ask is that anyone considering taking an MPL Locksmith Training course arrive with an open mind, a desire to learn, and a willingness to work hard. Ideally, you would have a background in a manual profession or experience working with your hands, so the tools you use are not alien to you.
What course should I take if I'm a complete beginner to locksmithing?
Of course, you can come into the locksmithing trade without a manual background – we have many students who have successfully done just that. However, you will need some general skills to make the most of your capabilities. We suggest that you take our five-day training course to build up the initial skills you need to get your locksmithing career up and running on solid foundations.
How much does locksmith training cost?

Are your Accreditations and Certificates recognised?
We are the UK’s ONLY provider of officially Accredited City & Guilds and NCFE Certified locksmith courses. Our accreditations recognise the high standards, process and delivery of bespoke training programmes which no other provider in the UK can offer.
In addition, we also run a range of courses which upon completion students receive our MPL certificate, which because we are the largest training provider in the UK is recognised throughout the industry as the gold standard.
Do I have to be a member of any trade organisations?
No, it’s not essential to be a member of any locksmithing or trade organisations, most of which are private companies that charge for membership. There are currently no governing bodies in the UK locksmith industry.
