Why should I become a trained locksmith?

If you are a prospective or seasoned locksmith you can choose to train or update your skills either through apprenticeships or courses at a dedicated training centre in order to learn the essential skills of locksmithing or to refine your skillset.

I recently decided to take the 1 day C&G upgrade because I was coming across more and more customers who were having problems with their UPVC door lock mechanisms. I live in a historic town, where most doors I deal with are traditional timber doors, so I have always been comfortable with dealing with door lock issues. As the business has grown, I have been dealing with more customers outside the town who have modern UPVC doors. I have found that the majority of calls are more about the door not shutting because the door is out of alignment. This 1 day course has given me the skills to confidently identify the problem and correct the issue so that the doors shut and lock correctly. This is now part of the services I offer. Since leaving school I worked for a local window manufacturing firm and served my time as a glazier, window and door installer manufacturing and fitting new windows and doors for customers

In 2011 I was fortunate enough to secure a job at the steel works in Redcar when it re-opened under SSI UK. I couldn’t wait to start work as a production operative on Concast and be part of the steel industry.

This all changed at the beginning of October 2015 when I received the call not to attend work and the news and social media informed me that my days as a steel worker were over as it was for 2000 others.

I had to decide what to do next and although I knew I would go back to my trade and install windows and doors I wanted to add an extra service for customers and decided to become a locksmith.

I researched into what training was available and decided to use MPL in Wakefield due to the good reviews on their website and the qualification they offered which was NCFE level 3.

I opted for the 3 day course which included a 2 night stay, I found the course very informative the tutor Graham shared his wealth of experience and knowledge with us and enabled me to complete the qualification and learn how to become a locksmith and expand my business.

I would recommend this training to anyone, all at MPL were very approachable and friendly happy to offer advice and guidance if needed especially Nicky, if I come across a problem now I know advice is just a call away, there was four of us on the course and we have remained in contact and speak regular with each other, and I now use MPL as my suppliers for locks and tools.

ELCAS course evaluations see army students pass out with flying colours

Army personnel have signalled their approval of MPL locksmith training courses through their feedback on the ELCAS approved programmes.

Trainees completing MPL’s 5-day Ultimate Locksmith Training course in May and June gave the course content, the training materials and the training methods a resounding seal of approval pointing the how comprehensive the training was, and how useful it will be in their day to day work out in the locksmithing field.
